Frequently Asked Q’s

(ok maybe not so frequent, but Q’s I’ve been asked none-the-less).

Why Should I Hire You?
- Thats a good Q: I have over 10 years of experience working with computers (8+ as a professional), and have worked with everyone from small local bands to giant multi-national corporations (like Fox TV and the NBA). I started off as a graphic designer and currently paint myself with the “web application developer” brush. Having both skillsets makes me fast, creative and super efficient! Hire me and see for yourself!

What can you provide for me?
-Marketing galore! Away with the old print modicum (though I do some print work too) and in with the new grandiose web. I provide logos & layouts (print or web), website layouts and designs, website and custom web application development (from shopping carts to full-on intranet systems), themes and skins for existing software, basic/essential search engine optimization and a whole suite of web-hosting supplies to fit any of the above!

Y’know your site doesnt work very well on IE6
- Well, that’s more of a statement than a question but to answer: Yes I know. While many of my sites get special optimization for older browsers, the majority of my personal and marketing software is specifically designed to work on modern browsers that support current CSS/DHTML standards. I suggest you upgrade- your overall web experience will be much better anyway.

What the heck is a “CMS”?
- I know, I know- I use a lot of acronyms on this blog as well as on my portfolio. Many of these terms are very common to the web design & development game and should you decide to hire me to work with you, feel free to familiarize yourself with these terms as I will likely continue to use them during our process: Web Terms Cheat Sheet.

I heard you work with Silverlight- can you explain that more?
-Absolutely. Microsoft Silverlight is essentially MS’s answer to Flash; it is a vector presentation format actually based off a software called Windows Presentation Format (WPF). A few years ago I attended a Silverlight summit at Microsoft headquarters in Seattle to be better educated in it. I originally learned it to create a cross-browser compatible streaming radio system for my previous employers and still use it occasionally for special purposes. I plan to write an article on it soon…

So WordPress Huh?
- Yup, that’s right. Over the last 3-4 years, I’ve done a TON of research on Content Management systems. In the early days, I went through lots of open-source programs, only too discover they’re either too simple, or too complicated for my customers. Enter WordPress: I’m a huge fan of the interface, ability to create “skins”, and open-realm of customization you can achieve with Plugins (I’ve written a number of them myself for clients).

Whats with the black and red colors, are you a witch?
-Actually, my original clients at VectorDefector were mostly bands and many of their designs had a propaganda feel that usually reflected that color scheme. I’m also a big fan of comic books. I combined my vector style of artwork with the “defector” propaganda notion, and shazaam! VectorDefector.com was born.

Do you work with any Microsoft languages (.NET etc)?
- I typically do not aside from streaming technologies (Windows Media Server & Expression). While I have nothing against .NET and other MS technology, I’m more of a proponent of Open-Source languages and software like PHP and mySQL- they run just as well, can complete the exact same tasks, and are available for all to share- how can you argue with that?

Can you fix my decade old website for $10?
-Um, no. I’m an well-rounded developer with almost 10 years of experience under my belt and unfortunately I need to pay the bills too. As most developers will tell you, I’m typically not into fixing some else’s aged work; however if you’re looking to give your website a brand new look and function without losing your old work and have a reasonable budget for quality work, we can definitely come to an arrangement.

…More to come!
